Have you checked to see if the 70Mb is stored in the RRD? I think it almost certainly is (meaning that its not a flaw in the display routines) however best to check.
Sometimes this can happen when the data collection is patchy, or if it is restarted with the counter at a lower value (so MRTG doesnt spot that its a first fetch) and your MaxBytes is not set correctly. (Make sure MaxBytes, or AbsMax, are set to prevent unreasonable values). You can use the Killspike utility to remove the spikes for the time being.
