I have posted about this in the MRTG and RRDTool mailing lists but no luck...

After the analysis I did on the weekend I found out that most of the peaks occured at the same time, a few months back, so I'm now trying to find the connection...

Anyway, thanx again for all your help, its appreciated!

Have you checked to see if the 70Mb is stored in the RRD? I think it almost certainly is (meaning that its not a flaw in the display routines) however best to check.

Sometimes this can happen when the data collection is patchy, or if it is restarted with the counter at a lower value (so MRTG doesnt spot that its a first fetch) and your MaxBytes is not set correctly. (Make sure MaxBytes, or AbsMax, are set to prevent unreasonable values). You can use the Killspike utility to remove the spikes for the time being.

Check with the MRTG support groups for more help? This seems a MRTG issue rather than a routers.cgi one (not that I dont want to try and help out, but maybe other people can provide more knowledge)

After all, if you have an average (for the day) of 15Mbps, then its not unreasonable to think that for some 5-minute period during that day, the traffic averaged at 70Mbps (assuming you are collecting data with a 5-min interval).

On the yearly/monthly graphs, the Peak lines tend to be way higher than the averages.

I should have pointed out that the "average traffic" spike is valid. Its just that the "max traffic" corresponding spike (the magenta one) is definitely exaggerated (a 5Mbps spike becomes a 70Mbps max spike), thats my problem.
