Post subject: MRTG data multiplied massively?

I have setup MRTG using RRD Tool and routers2, it pulls all the data in fine, but on some graphs, while the trends look correct, the legend on the Y axis is showing the data to be many millions times bigger than it is.

Im not sure if this is MRTG, RRD Tool, or routers2 causing the problem, but any help would be great.

MRTG config for one of the graphs:

Target[iis.totalPosts]:.1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.7.3.1.19.0&.1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.7.3.1.19.0:public@192.168.0.2
RouterUptime[iis.totalPosts]: public@192.168.0.2
MaxBytes[iis.totalPosts]: 100000
Title[iis.totalPosts]: IIS totalPosts
PageTop[iis.totalPosts]:
IIS totalPosts

ShortLegend[iis.totalPosts]:
YLegend[iis.totalPosts]: totalPosts
Legend1[iis.totalPosts]: totalPosts
LegendI[iis.totalPosts]:
Options[iis.totalPosts]: noo, nopercent, integer

Graph can be seen here: http://data.coolnicks.co.uk/mrtg_cfg-ii ... s-d-x2.png

The gaps are where I stopped it to configure things.

Could this be the value of the counters when I start monitoring, bad MRTG config, bad routers2 config?

Many thanks

Nick

The Y-axis is showing numbers with 'm' after them. This is the 'milli-' prefix, and your ShortLegend is empty, so what you're seeing is 800 m which is 0.8.

What you need to do is suppress the units prefixes. MRTG and RRDTool will, by default, make numbers under 1 be shown in milli-units (and over 1000 in kilo-units). This can look odd in cases where the units are not able to be given this sort of prefix, such as email throughput graphs.

Use the directive:

routers.cgi*Options[iis.totalPosts]: fixunit

which will take care of this for you, and you should see what you expect.

Steve, thats great, thank you - that fixes, and clears that confusion up.

Now the numbers are far too small, for example IIS Total posts, the graph is showing 0.0x to 0.0x, what maths goes on inside to calculate the data over 5 minutes? Is it showing an adverage for the 5 minutes? E.g there must have been at least 1 post to the webserver over the 5 minutes, so I would like this to display 1 etc.

The next problem is currently no graphs display on the left hand menu, I have to go to Options to list them, The default Devices display shows "mrtg" which is the name of the config file, but no link or graphs under it.

If im on the Preferences page, and the left hand menu displays Devices, then mrtg is a link, but only shows the first traffic graph from the config, then is no longer a link?

The next part I need to look into is making one graph from many others, I think I saw something about that in another post on the forum :D

Many thanks

Nick

By default, MRTG will calculate values as rate per second.

If the OID you are polling holds the actual rate, then you need to set option 'gauge'. However, your OID holds the total posts, it is just that the posts/sec is way too small to register.

Try setting option 'perminute' or 'perhour'. This will effectively multiply the value by 60 (or 3600) to give a better indication of the rate of posts.

If you are really interested in the graph showing the total (IE, constantly increasing) then use Options[]:gauge but this will look odd and not give meaningful total and percentile results.

routers2 displays a list of the config files in the Devices menu (so have one cfg file per device), and then the Targets menu gives a list of targets in that cfg file.

If you enable twinmenu mode (can set it manually, or in preferences, or as a default in the routers2.conf) then you get both menus simultaneously. This is usually easier if you have a 1024x768 screen.

To have multiple graphs combined, you need to define a UserDefined graph. There are examples on the demo server, and in the doc/EXAMPLES file, and also in the forums. Also check outthe other documentation in the doc directory.
