The MRTG_INT_DESCR is used to provide the Short description - used in the side menu, and in very small graphs. The big graph titles are taken from routers.cgi*Description[]: (if it is defined) and failing that, from the Title[]: directive.

If you'd like something different in the title, then probably the easiest thing to do is to modify the cfgmaker script yourself to place your favourite thing into the Title[] definitions. Otherwise you will have to edit each cfg fileto change it to what you want. Here, we use a modified cfgmaker script that adds a few extra directives, and crosslinks, and has different logic for the MRTG_INT_DESCR and Title[].

below is the first interface of the 10.10.10.43.cfg file. We would like to have the name on the left side show as system vs the IP name. So, intead of the left side name showing as 10.10.10.43, we would want it to show as border-43.domain.cc. I've made changes to the routers2.cfg file, but it hasn't made a difference. We ran Targetnames.pl and inserted the results into the router2.cgi under [targetnames]...is there something we are not doing?

also, under Pagetop, there is a Table with items such as System, Maintainer, description, iftype, ifname and Max Speed. what would the syntax be to use, say the Maintainer information from the table? thanx.

From your example, the labels used in the Targets menu will be taken from the MRTG_INT_DESCR definition, unless you have overridden this using the [targetnames] part of the routers2.conf (this is now deprecated - you should use routers.cgi*ShortDesc[]: in the .cfg file instead)

So, remove the lines you added to [targetnames], and add a line

routers.cgi*ShortDesc[10.10.10.43_Gi1_1]: border-43.domain.cc

and you should get what you want (or else change the MRTG_INT_DESCR definition).

The later versions of routers2 include some special code which can attempt to parse the PageTop definition, if it was created by the cfgmaker program. It will take the 'Description' line if it is there. In the routers2.conf, you can set the ifdefault=cfgmaker option, to set the default target short description to be what is obtained by parsing PageTop.

If you want anything else, then your best bet is to modify cfgmaker to add a routers.cgi*ShortDesc line with whatever description you prefer (thats what we did at our site)
