Hey Steve,

I realize that things are just getting going with ESX 3.0, but I'm wondering if you've got any sense yet of the differences between 3.0 and 3.5. Has anyone tested your check plugins against a 3.5 server yet?

I've been contacted by one of the developers at VMWare themselves, who have a copy of the plugin 3.0 beta and are running some tests for me. Hopefully, in the new year he'll get back with a list of required changes to support ESX 3.5. The difference should be, I hope, minimal, since with luck its only a format change for the /proc files.

Hi Guys,

Has there been any progress on monitoring ESX 3.5? Our environment runs this version of ESX exclusively and trying to monitor it with Nagios is proving quite challenging.

Is there anyone who can give me some ideas on how to get this patch running?

Has anyone implemented or tested this patch in their production environment?

There is now a new plugin in beta, check_vmware. This queries the VirtualCentre using the VI Perl API and so works with all versions of VMware ESX. It works for both Nagios and MRTG, but does not yet have the full functionality of the check_esx2. However, for Nagios it can pull out the VirtualCentre alarm status, which is useful.

Let me know if you'd like to get a beta.

I'd love to trial the beta for ESX 3.5, but we don't have Virtual Centre, just a couple of independant ESX hosts - will it still work?

The check_vmware plugin should work on a vmware host directly, as well as a virtualcentre, although some stats may not be available.

I'll post it in here shortly.
