Which version of check_esx3 and vmware-stats are you using, and which version of ESX Server? There were bugs introduced by the later versions of ESX unfortunately, the absolute latest check_esx3 should work and not have these problems.

However, check_vmware is now in development which uses the VC API instead of SNMP to do the monitoring, and is much more accurate (although slower). Since ESX 3i does not support SNMP at all this will be the way to go in the future.
