I need help locating a script for my Cisco devices. The particular script that I'm looking for is a locate script. This script allows you to locate a user by IP on your network. For example, lets say that you have a mix of 6500s and 3700s throughout your network and they are all reporting to MRTG. I could navigate to my browser. For example http://servername/locate locate is a script and on this page I would enter the IP address of the device that I'm looking for. The results that were returned to me were basically telling me which switch this ip was on and which port. It would also output the interface information for me. If no one know of such a script then maybe someone can be kind and help write one. This is very useful especially when you need to find the user in a jiffy. I have seen these and other similar scripts on other mrtg installations but have never been able to get the scripts. Any help is greatly appreicated. Thanks, |

I will try to get the script and post it here. I'm not a coder so hopefully someone can help me understand whats going on with it. But here is basically what the script does. There is multiple queries going on within the script. First, I believe the script basically queries the arp table of the cisco switch. For example, if your looking for 192.168.2.2 the the script would querey the arp table for that address. The arp table "query" would return the ip and associated mac address. Once that is found the script can continue and run the next query. This query would search the mac address database for the associated mac address. The end result is that the switch would tell you what port it is on. Once you know which port it is on you can also run a "show interface <port-number> command and this can also be outputed to the screen. Super handy script for any network person. I get questions all the time about a machine on the network that is infected with a spam bot or something else. I can track it down but it does take a little while. This tool basically will let me throw an ip in a search field and BAM!!! I know within seconds which switch and which port the ip is on. -Thanks |
