It is very true that we do not have to wait for special occassions to donate. The good thing is that special and kind gestures like this do prompt people like me to remember to give. I will be donating something this week; at least it is a good way to start the New Year :D

My kids donate 50per cent of there pocket money to the red cross and help me work for the homeless

I ran across this thread while searching for some updated info on the earthquake there. Good for you for doing your part. I donated some money back when it happened as well.

Just wanted to say thanks for this, on behalf of Kiwi's everywhere.

In Christchurch we're still getting over the problems caused by the earthquake, and a lot still needs doing. Many people have left the city altogether which isn't what's needed right now.
