Sounds like you're doing a submit passive? You shouldnt normally need to do this. In the 'output' field you put whatever you want to appear in the text relating to the status.
If you are receiving the NSCA alerts on the nagios box, but they arents updating the status, then check the following -
1. The service name sent EXACTLY matches the service name defined. The nagios.log should show error messages if the host/service doesnt match a defined one.
2. The nagios.cmd pipe exists, and is writeable by the nsca process
3. You Nagios is configured to read the nagios.cmd pipe at a small enough interval, and act on the statuses received from it.
Usually, the problem is one of these three.
