I have 2 Cisco 2821 routers with VWIC-2MFT-E1
interfaces installed. I ran the update_myrouters and the cfg files are created and interfaces are listed. However, serial 0/0/0:1 and serial 0/0/1:1 do not show any data. I looked at the config file and the T1-0/0/0 and T1-0/0/1 sections are commented out. I have included them here. It says that these are DS1 controllers. Does anyone know how to get around this so I can monitor the serial interfaces?

Thanks in advance

Topic moved to MRTG forum.

MRTG is not collecting data for this because the interface definition is commented out in the config file.

From the comments, it looks like cfgmaker has automatically commented this out because it could not query the interface via SNMP. This is becase it is a DS1 controller.

From your cfg file snippet, it looks as if you are already monitoring the Serial interfaces, Serial0/0/0:1 and Serial0/0/1:1 in the later definitions. The DS1 'interface' is just a controller (and people with more network experience want to confirm this?)

Thanks Steve. Yes, it would appear that Serial0/0/0:1 and Serial0/0/1:1 would be collecting data, however they are not. I just get a grey screen when I click on those interfaces in the graph.

Make sure that you are actually running the MRTG process to collect data. Check for any error output when it attempts to collect statistics for these interfaces. Check that the .rrd files exist, and are being updated. Make sure you have been running data collection for at least 15 mins (you need 3 valid data points minimum)

A grey graph indicates No Data (as opposed to zeros). Either it is not being collected due to an error, or it cannot be written to the file.

I verified mrtg is running. I am actually monitoring other routers and switches. There are .rrd files and they are updating. I looked at the mrtg log and found this. Maybe this will help figure out the problem:

This is MRTG telling you that is cannot find an dinterface with the name Se0/0/0:1 on a device at 100.10.14.5 using the SNMP community string specified. (incidentally, do you really want the world to know your community string??) Hence, it cannot collect any data.

This could be because
1. community string wrong
2. IP address wrong
3. Permissions on the device wrong
4. routing/firewall issue
5. Interface name wrong or changed
6. Strange device which does not have the MIB tree as expected
7. Network loading dropping SNMP packets
8. Device loading causing it to timeout on SNMP queries

Try regenerating the .cfg file. You may also need to switch to using a different method (eg interface number rather than name) to uniquely identify the device.
