Thanks for speedy reply. I think I understand how it works, it's just that I can't get it right!
Specifically, what I'm trying to do is to group a subset of devices that are monitored using 'normal' mrtg config files by setting up mrtg config files with nothing but WorkDir and Include statements to bring in the details from the 'normal' mrtg config files.

In the routers2.conf routers.cgi section I have set
group = yes
multilevel = yes
left groupsep to default
confpath = /var/www/mrtgdir

In the routers2.conf targetnames section I have listed
/var/www/mrtgdir [this contains all the 'normal' mrtg config files)
/var/www/mrtgdir/pilot [this contains the 'include' mrtg config files]

When I run routers2 I see a tree with [G]/var/www/mrtgdir and then, indented, the devices with 'normal' mrtg files but no trace of the files in the pilot directory. I've looked at the Configuration Verification page and, again, no sign of "pilot".
I've tried setting groupsep to /, then I get a hierarchy of [G]var [G]www [G]mrtgdir getting progressively more indented followed by the devices with 'normal' mrtg files but again no trace of the files in the pilot directory.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Brilliant! (you not me!! ) You're right - I'd forgotten all about cfgfiles and, looking back, it is mentioned earlier in the thread. At one point even tried to assign multiple values to confpath so I was almost on the right lines.

All working now - great work
