Cheshire Cat Computing

Is it in the registry or is there a flat file that contains the event filters? If it is in the registry why? I would much rather be able to drop a config file on the server start the service and run.

The configurations are held in the register, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Cheshire Cat/Nagios

This was easier to manipulate than using a text file, and is the 'recommended way' of doing things on a Microsoft server (so says Microsoft, anyway).

You can create a filter set in the registry, then export a .reg file using the regedit utility. Then, run regedit on the file to import it on different machines. This will allow you to quickly distribute a set of filters. You will need the sub-keys of the Cheshire Cat/Nagios branch, plus the maxfilter value.

If you look into (free) packages such as Inno Setup Compiler, you could distribute an install package that sets the registry options. Here, we have a customised version of the Agent install package that in addition gives the option to install different sets of pre-defined filters. I can send you the Inno config .iss file if required, which you can then modify and recompile to make a custom install package.

Thanks for the quick response! I think I'll just go the .reg export route, it's pretty simple to do now that I put my windows hat back on. I just am so used to flat files nowadays as you are proably too.

If you do it this way, remember that the nodename is also stored in that directory, and that maxfilter can be anything as long as it is greater than the max number of the defined filters. Making it too big makes things slower on startup, though.

How about the NSCA Server Information? I mean the hostname or IP Address, the Port, and the password.

Is this information stored in the Registry also? If so, what's the location?

We're planning to change our Nagios Server and it's very likely our IP address will have to change. Therefore we'll have to adjust the configuration in a considerable number of clients. It would help a lot if we can change the config using a GPO or a similar apporach.
