So, I'm looking at the code for disk space usage (i have not gotten to look at anything else since I was starting out with monitoring our datastores)... why are the math formulas the way they are (aka... 1024000000 instead of 1024^3 or 1024*1024*1024)?

Thanks,
Shaun

Because of the differrent ways people seem to define what 1GB actually is.

Everyone seems to agree that 1KB = 1024B, but many people here (windows admins, SAN admins) seem to prefer the Decimal multipliers from then on. I'm still not clear on which VMWare itself uses. The 1024000000 number is a compromise... I would prefer 1024^3 but this seems to give too small a figure for many people.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification!

On vSphere 4.1 with an IBM XIV, I have converted to ^3 as this matches the numbers inside of vSphere. :-) Otherwise, it was saying I had an extra 50GB or so free here and there, depending upon the Datastore.

I also set it up to report back GB instead of MB, since i'm dealing with much larger datastores.

Thanks!
-Shaun

Hi! If I may first say, thanks so much for the great plugin.

I just got up and running today, first time using the script. Some quick output for info:

check_vmware.pl --version
vSphere SDK for Perl version: 4.1
Script 'check_vmware.pl' version: 1.13

My question: CPU usage is reporting at 184023688.06% or similar. Was wondering if there's any tips or insight as to why?

Some more possibly relevant info:

Nagios, etc. running on Ubuntu Hardy (8.04 LTS). Additional check_vmware Perl requirements installed from repository.

I've tested so far on two hosts, both ESXi, one 3.5, the other 4.0.

Memory, disk and status report properly.

Thanks!

Ok, scratch that, I found the forum thread where this problem has been discussed. Please excuse the noise!

Dear Steve. Could you help me please. I have linux-based nagios xi, and I have VCenter server.
What kind of Perl API i need?
http://www.vmware.com/download/sdk/api.html
first one I suppose.
But I cant install it. It is always some errors on centos 5.5 Final.
Please, help.

The one you want is the v4.1 Perl SDK.
http://www.vmware.com/downloads/downloa ... =sdkperl41
vSphere Perl SDK for Linux (32 or 64bit, about 23MB).

Steve

Hi Steve

Many thanks for your excellent check_vmware plugin! :D I'm using it top monitor my vmware clusters via nagios, and I'm now venturing to graph the performance f the entire vmware data center, and sub-clusters using mrtg. Being new to VMware, I'm having a little trouble understanding VMware cluster performance reporting: Are the numbers I'm reading from via the VMware API using check_vmware.pl believable ? How can I compare? What kind of accuracy can I expect?

Could you suggest a process I could use, and possibly point me in the direction of some reading material that dals with this subject, , or some other means by which I could verify the accuracy of the graphs I'm seeing in MRTG (cpu, memory, datastore usage, network traffic). Specifically, I have doubts about the network traffic results reported by check_vmware in mrtg mode: when ever I poll, I get the exact same number for "outgoing traffic" as I do for "incoming traffic", implying that the rate at which traffic is going out of the physical interfaces of the cluster(s) equals the rate at which traffic is leaving outbound those interfaces :? Is this a bug in the script and if so is there a patch for this ?

There's also some debate among my fellow admins as to wether it's possible at all to obtain accurate datastore utilisation stats from the vmware cluster :? What kind of caveats would one have to observer when interpreting datastore graphs generated using check_vmware.pl ?

Btw, script version: 1.13

Thanks!
Traiano
